AF-S NIKKOR 35MM F/1.8G ED Review
Nikon recently announced the latest addition to its affordable line of prime lenses, the new AF-S NIKKOR 35mm F1.8G ED lens. This lens is designed for the high-resolution sensors, the FX-format and is different from the type DX that was introduced in 2009. It completes the line-up of Type G, F1.8 prime lenses by Nikon which includes the following lenses: AF-S NIKKOR 28mm F1.8G, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm F1.8G and AF-S NIKKOR 85mm F1.8G lenses.
Having a maximum aperture opening of F1.8 and a field angle-of-view of 63 degrees, the 35mm is considered a classic. It is a popular focal length used by photojournalists doing documentary, reportage or street photography. And it brings with it the following features:
Having an aperture opening of F1.8, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm F1.8G ED lens provides excellent viewfinder clarity and a good depth-of-field control for a distinctive separation of the subject from the background. It also performs well in low light conditions. These features are perfect for night photography. Its optics consists of 11 elements in 8 groups which includes one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and one aspherical lens element. This is designed to minimize chromatic aberrations or lens distortion and gives you a sharp, contrast-rich result. This optical design was adapted from the professional NIKKOR 35mm F1.4 lens which also gives the 35mm F1.8G ED lens a minimal sagittal coma flare. This makes every point of light captured to be crisp in detail, an important feature when creating beautiful nightscape scenes.
Silent Wave Motor
The 35mm F1.8G ED lens is equipped with Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor or SWM. This technology allows you to auto-focus on your subject swiftly in a smooth and quiet manner. This is ideal when using your camera for video. The new lens also has a minimum focus distance of 25cm which allows you to get close to your subject. It has a manual focus ring that allows you to make fine adjustments that creates the perfect mood for your shot.
The 35MM F1.8G ED lens has 7 rounded diaphragm blade opening which allows the lens to step-down to F16. At its maximum opening of F1.8 and giving a shallow depth of field, the lens produces a very good bokeh. Its rounded diaphragm makes a fine gradation of the image blur from the point of focus to the background. This gives a more natural blur. Also it results in the creation of a beautifully smooth and circular bokeh.
The new AF-S NIKKOR 35mm F1.8G ED lens is lightweight, at only 305g. This is a perfect lens to be carried without being saddled by fatigue specially when doing street photography. It is also ideal for doing environmental portraiture, landscapes, cityscapes and nightscapes.
This new lens comes with the HB-70 Lens Hood and the CL-0915 Flexible Lens Pouch. It will be available in February 2014.
