PowerShot ELPH 340 HS Review

In this era of social networking, taking one’s image or recording day-to-day events has become the norm.  Aimed at addressing the limitations of smart phone shooters, the PowerShot ELPH 340 (in the United States, or IXUS 265 in other countries) offers an unparalleled advantage by providing a super zoom and better image result during low light conditions — features that social bloggers would definitely like to have. The ELPH 340 has the same features as the PowerShot SX600 but it comes in a smaller, more compact package and a more affordable price.  One disadvantage, though, is that it has a slightly less zoom power.

Optical Zoom

Because of its ultra compact size, the ELPH 340 HS comes with less zoom than the SX600 with a 12x optical zoom. But this is still better than the previous ELPH model, the ELPH 330 which could only offer a 10x optical zoom.  The ELPH’s 12x optical zoom is equivalent to a 25-30mm lens. It gives you the advantage of shooting wide-angled shots of portraits and sceneries, as well as close-ups of far distant objects – such as participants in a parade, players in a ball game or perhaps animals in their habitat. There is also an option to increase the zoom to 24x using ZoomPlus (digital zoom) which is equivalent to 600mm.

Creative Shot Mode

To appeal to the Instagram market, Canon has incorporated the Creative Shot Mode in its new ELPH series. This feature provides artistic choices to the user by providing four filter themes to choose from: Monochrome, Retro, Special or Natural with a total of 46 filters. By presetting your choice of filter, once the shot is taken, the camera will process the image and render five variations to choose from based on composition, lighting and color. The original image will also be retained. It’s as easy as Instagram itself.

Hybrid Auto Mode

Having a highlight reel of your shooting activities is as easy as pushing a button. With the Hybrid Auto mode, the camera records a four-second clip as you take an image. This clip is combined with the image you took and comes out with a 720p video. There won’t be any need to use special software for this.

Canon HS System

Increasing the resolution by 4MP from its predecessor, the ELPH 340’s 16MP CMOS sensor plus its Digic 4+ Image Processor combine to boost Canon’s HS (High Sensitivity) System. This fusion results in high quality images even in low light situations.

Mobile Device Connect

Being wired connected to your world is convenient with its built-in Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Communication) capability. Transferring images or videos or uploading them in social networking sites, compatible smart phones, computers or tablets is as easy as a flick of a button. You can also remotely control the ELPH 340 using a smart phone with a free Canon Camera Window app.

Conclusion

This camera offers a great choice for those wanting more quality images than those taken from their smart phones. Its handy and compact design allows you to carry it anywhere and record your daily activities in life, at your utmost convenience. It comes in various colors such as purple, silver and black, and will be available for shipping this March 2014.
